Filed under Featured, Livestream Links and Order for Worship
Thank you for joining us today, January 10, 2021.
As we reflect on the events at the U.S. Capitol this past week, we are thinking about defining moments. This coincides with the remembrance of the baptism of Jesus. Will this week be a turning point for our world, our country – and even for you? Worship with us, and be the change the world so desperately needs.
If you have questions or problems about Ivy Chapel or our virtual worship, please contact us.
Here’s the order for worship for today:
Prelude – Anna DiVesta
Responsive Call to Worship – Pastor Dan Wilson
One: God is the Creator of all life.
All: God sends light to shine in the darkness.
One: God sends Christ to calm this world’s turbulent seas.
All: God takes care of humankind – calming fears and giving faith.
One: God’s love is real.
All: God’s grace is eternal.
One: Our cup overflows!
All: Together, let us praise God!
Prayer of Invocation – Pastor Dan
One: Let us pray.
All: Living God, we worship you this day. You are the One who offers life and breath to all creation. From the very beginning, you have been moving over the face of the waters. Faithful and Loving God, we turn to you in prayer this day for reassurance. Holy Spirit, you are the One with the power to calm a stormy sea or to “trouble†a pool of still water. From water, life springs up! By water, life is nourished. Through water, new life begins. Christ Jesus, as we remember your baptism in the Jordan River, may we celebrate anew our holy baptism. Amen.
Hymn – “Spirit of God, Descend Upon My Heart†– #154
Spirit of God, descend upon my heart;
Wean it from earth, through all its pulses move;
Stoop to my weakness, mighty as You art,
And make me love Thee as I ought to love.
I ask no dream, no prophet ecstasies,
No sudden rending of the veil of clay.
No angel visitant, no opening skies;
But take the dimness of my soul away.
Hast Thou not bid us love Thee, God and King?
All, all Thine own, soul, heart and strength and mind.
I see Thy cross – there teach my heart to cling;
O let me seek Thee, and O let me find.
Teach me to feel that Thou art always high;
Teach me the struggles of the soul to bear,
To check the rising doubt, the rebel sigh;
Teach me the patience of unanswered prayer.
Teach me too love Thee as Thine angels love,
One holy passion filling all my frame,
The baptism of the heav’n descended Dove,
My heart an altar, and Thy love the flame.
Scripture Reading – Psalm 29:1-4, 9-11 – Pastor Dan
Children’s Message – Ashton Wilson
Special Music
Scripture Reading – Mark 1:4-11 – Pastor Dan
Sermon – Pastor Dan

let Him fill your life and satisfy your soul.
O let him have the things that hold you and his Spirit, like a dove,
will descend upon your life and make you whole.
REFRAIN
Jesus, O Jesus, come and fill your lambs.
Jesus, O Jesus, come and fill your lambs.
- O come and sing this song with gladness as your hearts are filled with joy,

and you’ll enter into life in Jesus’ name.

O CHRISTMAS TREE #221 (Verse 1)
O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree, your branches are uplifted.
You seem to say that on this day our world’s supremely gifted.
The shining of your candles bright, reminds us Light has come tonight.
O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree, you lift our eyes to heaven.
ANGELS WE HAVE HEARD ON HIGH #206 (Verses 1 and 2)
Angels we have heard on high, Sweetly singing o’er the plains
And the mountains in reply Echo back their joyous strains.
Gloria in excelsis Deo
Gloria in excelsis Deo
Shepherds, why this jubilee? Why your joyous strains prolong?
Say what may the tidings be, Which inspire your heav’nly song?
Gloria in excelsis Deo
Gloria in excelsis Deo
WE THREE KINGS OF ORIENT ARE #220 (Verses 1 and 5)
We three kings of Orient are, Bearing gifts we traverse afar.
Field and fountain, moor and mountain, Following yonder star.
O star of wonder, star of night,
Star with royal beauty bright,
Westward leading, still proceeding, Guide us to thy perfect light.
Glorious now behold Him arise, King and God and Sacrifice
Alleluia, Alleluia! Peals through the earth and skies.
O star of wonder, star of night,
Star with royal beauty bright,
Westward leading, still proceeding, Guide us to thy perfect light.
O LITTLE TOWN OF BETHLEHEM #200 (Verses 1 and 4)
O little town of Bethlehem, How still we see thee lie!
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep The silent stars go by.
Yet in thy dark streets shineth The everlasting Light;
The hopes and fears of all the years Are met in thee tonight.
O holy Child of Bethlehem! Descend to us, we pray;
Cast out our sin, and enter in; Be born in us today.
We hear the Christmas angels The great glad tidings tell;
O come to us, abide with us, Our Lord Emmanuel.
JOY TO THE WORLD #194 (Verses 1, 2, and 4)
Joy to the world! the Lord is come; Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare Him room,
And heav’n and nature sing, And heav’n and nature sing,
And heav’n, and heav’n and nature sing.
Joy to the earth! the Savior reigns; Let men their songs employ;
While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains
Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat, repeat the sounding joy.
He rules the world with truth and grace, And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness,
And wonders of His love, And wonders of His love,
And wonders, wonders of His love.

More love to Thee, O Christ, more love to Thee!
Hear Thou the prayer I make On Bended Knee;
This is my earnest plea: More love, O Christ, to Thee,

Once earthly joy I craved, Sought peace and rest;
Now Thee alone I seek, Give what is best;
This all my prayer shall be: More, love, O Christ, to Thee,
More love to Thee, More love to Thee!
Let sorrow do its work, Send grief and pain;
Sweet are Thy messengers, Sweet their refrain,
When they can sing with me; More love, O Christ, to Thee,
More love to Thee, More love to Thee!

May richer, fuller be. - O Light that foll’west all my way, I yield my flickering torch to Thee;
My heart restores its borrowed ray, That in Thy sunshine’s blaze its day
May brighter, fairer be. - O Joy that seekest me through pain, I cannot close my heart to Thee;
I trace the rainbow through the rain, And feel the promise is not vain
That morn shall tearless be. - O Cross that lightest up my head, I dare not ask to fly from thee;
I lay in dust life’s glory dead, And from the ground there blossoms red
Life that shall endless be.

When nothing else could help, Love lifted me.
Love lifted me! Love lifted me!
When nothing else could help, Love lifted me.

Love so mighty and so true Merits my soul’s best songs;
Faithful, loving service too To Him belongs.

- I then shall live as one who’s been forgiven; I’ll walk with joy to know my debts are paid.
I know my name is clear before my Father; I am His child, and I am not afraid.
So greatly pardoned, I’ll forgive my brother; The law of lover I gladly will obey. - I then shall live as one who’s learned compassion; I’ve been so loved that I’ll risk loving, too.
I know how fear builds walls instead of bridges; I dare to see another’s poinot of view.
And when relationships demand commitment, Then I’ll be there to care and follow through. - Your kingdom come around and thru and in me, Your pow’r and glory, let them shine thru me;
Your pow’r and glory, let them shine thru me; Your Hallowed Name, O may I bear with honor,
And may Your living Kingdom come in me.
The Bread of Life, O may I share with honor, And may you fee a hungry world thru me.

All: God of life, you are a joy to behold! You are always near. Your constant closeness is a blessing. Realizing that you are close by each moment fills us with joy and peace. Every breath we breathe is a gift from you. Our every step, our every word, our every action is visible to you, God. You alone know the burdens that we are carrying. Sometimes our journey seems to go on forever, and we feel as though we never get any rest. Yet you are aware of our fatigue, God. This opportunity to receive nourishment from you fills us with gladness.
We thank you, God, that your revelation does not come to us because we are worthy. No, the truth is, you simply reveal things to people because you are a Gracious and Loving God.
Open our hearts to receive the gifts you would like to offer your Church during this time of worship. Jesus, you are our Risen Savior. We have heard your invitation to come to you. We long to walk in your footsteps and to live in your ways, Jesus. May we follow your lead and get behind you.
